Making Decisions

I am writing this more as a benefit to myself rather than to readers, but it occurred to me that some of you may be going through similar situations and it’s always comforting to know that.

I am currently in the midst of writing my personal statement for university. For those of you who don’t know, a personal statement is a little bit like a CV. It states why you want to do that particular course and why the uni should choose you to go there. I am in the process of writing mine at the moment and the deadline for applications is 1st November.

However, I am having somewhat of an internal crisis – I can’t decide between two of my favourite things: Law or Psychology.

From the age of about 12 I have wanted to be a clinical psychologist. Because of my own experiences I wanted to use those to help others through mental health issues. Since then I have done Psychology GCSE and currently studying Psychology A level. I was all set for studying Psychology at university. Then when I went to choose my subjects for A level I wanted to do something which I had never done before and was different, so I chose Law. Since I started I have loved every minute of it – our teacher is amazing and the content is fascinating. I’ve learnt about legal careers and am desperate to become a Barrister.

The problem now, is that I can’t decide which subject I should study. I get similar good grades in both and enjoy both equally. I am tempted to do Law because that’s what I want to have a career in but with psychology I have the option of doing a 1 year conversion course to law afterwards and still retain the option of carrying on to become a clinical psychologist. If I do Law then I feel like I’m cheating on Psychology (do you get that?) but what if I do Psychology and spend the entire time wishing I was doing Law or vide versa? I can’t imagine not studying either one.

I just needed to have a little ramble to myself and maybe to others too. ūüôā

Obviously no one can make the decision for me, but if you have any advice on how to make a decision which feels right, please please leave a comment below, along with your experience of making big decisions!

The Matching Hypothesis

This is very different to my usual relaxed and casual posts, but I’ve been thinking about this theory for a while now and I need a ramble about it. I do A level Psychology and the current project is on the Matching Hypothesis. Hopefully some of you are aware of what this theory explains/proposes but most people I’ve asked about have no idea about it. The Matching Hypothesis proposes that people are more likely to have long standing relationships with someone who is as equally attractive as they are. It was just one of those theories where¬†certain things just start to make sense and you just think yes that’s why. It also suggests that if the two people differ greatly in physical attractiveness, then the less attractive person has some compensating quality, such as wealth or status.

I am not 100% sure I agree with this theory, because there are so many circumstances in which relationships are formed, therefore it simply cannot be accountable for all relationships. I also think it represents us humans as being very shallow beings, which I also do not agree with РI mean, yes some people are very shallow, but a lot are also not.

However, I do think it’s an awesome explanation and I’m sure you can think of a few couples who fit this description.

I know that was a short blog post but I wanted to write it quickly whilst I still had the thought in my head. I’d love to hear your views on this theory – do you agree with it?

The Liebster Blogger Award

Liebster Award Sign

I’m so happy to tell you that I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Blogger Award – an award for new blogs which have less than 200 followers. Thank you so much to Hannah who nominated me. Go check out her blog – https://wordsmithobservations.wordpress.com/ – you won’t regret it. ūüôā This is the first blogger award I’ve ever recieved, so it’s pretty awesome to be honest. Plus, I get to discover and nominate 11 other bloggers. Here are the rules:

Liebster Award List

These are the questions that I was given (and my answers):

  1. What made you pursue writing? I have always been keen on writing down thoughts/feeling in a diary. Blogging allows me to do this¬†whilst exploring other people’s thoughts and sharing my own.
  2. What is the most important event/events that have grown you into the person you are today?¬†Flying to Australia on my own was an amazing experience. I learnt how to be independent and cope when things don’t go the way they’re planned.
  3. Describe yourself in one sentence. Always looking for new adventures/exciting things to do.
  4. If you could meet with anyone past or present who would it be and why?¬†Probably Florence Nightingale. She’s such a role model for standing out from the crowd and not following what everyone else is doing. She also had a big impact on the way we approach medicine today.
  5. What are 5 principles that you try to live your life by?¬†Do the right thing, even if it means standing on your own. Have no regrets. Be yourself – don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd and be nice to everyone you meet.
  6. If you could pack up and live anywhere in the world for a year, where would you live and why? Definitely Australia. The accents, the food, the beaches, the cities and of course the amazingly hot weather Рwhat is there not to like?!
  7. Who are your favourite authors? Why do you like their work so much?¬† J.K Rowling definitely! I love the Harry Potter books. They’re my comfort books; whenever I’m nervous/feeling down they cheer me up.
  8. ¬†If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? I would absolutely love to be a singer, it’s always been my dream job.
  9. What do you love to do in your free time? I usually hang out with friends or if I have time to myself I like to sing, read a book, or catch up on a new episode of a TV series on Netflix!
  10. What would you say is your biggest downfall? I often find it difficult to make good friends in new situations and I wish I could be more outgoing.
  11. What would you say is your best attribute? I am very ambitious; I know what my goals are and I work hard to achieve them.
