Making Decisions

I am writing this more as a benefit to myself rather than to readers, but it occurred to me that some of you may be going through similar situations and it’s always comforting to know that.

I am currently in the midst of writing my personal statement for university. For those of you who don’t know, a personal statement is a little bit like a CV. It states why you want to do that particular course and why the uni should choose you to go there. I am in the process of writing mine at the moment and the deadline for applications is 1st November.

However, I am having somewhat of an internal crisis – I can’t decide between two of my favourite things: Law or Psychology.

From the age of about 12 I have wanted to be a clinical psychologist. Because of my own experiences I wanted to use those to help others through mental health issues. Since then I have done Psychology GCSE and currently studying Psychology A level. I was all set for studying Psychology at university. Then when I went to choose my subjects for A level I wanted to do something which I had never done before and was different, so I chose Law. Since I started I have loved every minute of it – our teacher is amazing and the content is fascinating. I’ve learnt about legal careers and am desperate to become a Barrister.

The problem now, is that I can’t decide which subject I should study. I get similar good grades in both and enjoy both equally. I am tempted to do Law because that’s what I want to have a career in but with psychology I have the option of doing a 1 year conversion course to law afterwards and still retain the option of carrying on to become a clinical psychologist. If I do Law then I feel like I’m cheating on Psychology (do you get that?) but what if I do Psychology and spend the entire time wishing I was doing Law or vide versa? I can’t imagine not studying either one.

I just needed to have a little ramble to myself and maybe to others too. 🙂

Obviously no one can make the decision for me, but if you have any advice on how to make a decision which feels right, please please leave a comment below, along with your experience of making big decisions!

A day on Lake Como – August 2017

This is probably up there with one of my favourite holiday days ever! The place we were staying at had a small rowing boat which we could take out onto the lake, so that’s exactly what we did. We were out there for about 4 hours. The scenery was just beautiful and the water was so awesome the way it glittered in the sun light. We rowed around the lake and it was harder work than it looked! We then stopped at a cafe on the beach for a snack and went swimming.

It was such a good day and I thoroughly enjoyed it! See the photos below 🙂

The Black Forest – August 2017

Welcome to the second Switzerland post….I hope you’re not bored yet! 😛

A few days ago we drove to the Black Forest in Germany – it took around an hour to get there as it was only just over the border. As you may be aware, the Black Forest is a huge place, so we went specifically to Todtmoos and then to Blasien.

The drive itself was pretty awesome. Once we’d got across the border and out of the roads all you could see were green fields for miles around. We stopped a few times along the windy road to take photographs and gaze at the beautiful scenery. We first went to a little village called Todtmoos. I was so impressed by how Swiss (or German!) it looked. Everything looked like something out of a TV set! From the wooden signs to the background of trees it was breath taking. The trees actually reminded me of the intro to one of the Twilight movies where they pan over the trees. We found a church which had very unusual decor and then stopped for cake/drinks at a local cafe.

Our second (and last) stop was Blasien. We didn’t explore this town as much as we mainly went there to see the Domo (cathedral). The Domo was completely white inside – which was not what I was expecting when I walked through the door! It was a great day and I was thoroughly wiped out by the time we got back!

Zug, Switzerland – August 2017

Hello! This is going to be the first of a few posts containing memories and photos from my holiday to Switzerland. We went to several different places so I thought that instead of squeezing it all into one post, I would do several smaller ones. I thought I would kick off the Switzerland post spam with a fairly short post about Zug.

Zug is about an hour away from where we’re staying, and very near to where my Aunt lives. We met up with her and had lunch in the town then strolled around for a while. We come to Switzerland often but I feel like this is the first time I’ve ever really felt like I’ve seen lots of Swiss things! I love all the houses with their shutters and bright colours – I feel like I’ve just stepped out of Heidi! The lake was also gorgeous and unexpected! They were even setting up for a Jazz concert in the evening, which I thought was very cool. Unfortunately we were only there for a few short hours as we needed to get back. I would have loved to stay for longer and sunbathe by the lake!

Lincoln – August 2017

Hi! Back again with another travel post 🙂

Earlier this month I went to Lincoln for a week on a choir tour. We were singing in the cathedral all day for a week and sung for services each day. It’s something I love doing each year and it’s great for the social side too – however I only see most of the people once a year, so it always takes a few days for me to warm up to them again! Although we spent most of the time singing, we still had plenty of time to wonder around on a day off and long lunch breaks!

I’d never been to Lincoln before, but I was pleasantly surprised! It’s not a huge city but has bustling streets, an awesome cathedral, a fascinating castle and of course there’s the steep hill – which everyone tried to avoid walking up or down! We went to all of the above places and even got to do a roof top tour of the cathedral – which presented the most amazing views!

Singing for an entire week is probably one of my favourite things, but I did experience withdrawal symptoms when I got home! Being around people all week and releasing all those endorphins through singing takes some coming out of.

Malvern – summer getaway

Hello! It’s been a while since I wrote anything on here but I’m back with a travelling/holiday post! Its the summer holidays here and every year my mum, brother and I go away for a few days in July (my dad has to work so doesn’t come). Last year we went camping in Cheddar Gorge and this year we went to Malvern, which is near Worchester. I realised recently that considering I live in England, I have probably only seen 10% of it, which is why I really enjoy these little trips that we do each year.

We arrived at our hotel on Sunday evening and went more or less straight to bed. The next day we walked up into the Malvern Hills. Walking is not really something I actively choose to do but this was awesome and the views were beautiful! We walked about 7 miles which took around 3 and a half hours.

We spent the rest of the time exploring the tiny town and enjoying the luxury of having a pool and gym at the hotel. The ground of the hotel itself were beautiful and perfect for an afternoon of sunbathing. We went into the priory gardens in the town and the Priory itself. It felt very typically British to be standing next to a band stand eating an ice cream!

On the way home we went to Worchester and popped into a medical museum that was in the university. It was actually a lot more interesting than we thought it was going to be! We then went into the town center and went to the cathedral. My brother and I were somewhat dragged to the evensong by my mum, who wanted to go as it was being broadcast on BBC radio. The singing was actually fairly good! We also happened to bump into a friend and briefly chatted to him.

It was a good few days away – although tiring! Definitely reccommend it, especially if you love walking holidays!

The Matching Hypothesis

This is very different to my usual relaxed and casual posts, but I’ve been thinking about this theory for a while now and I need a ramble about it. I do A level Psychology and the current project is on the Matching Hypothesis. Hopefully some of you are aware of what this theory explains/proposes but most people I’ve asked about have no idea about it. The Matching Hypothesis proposes that people are more likely to have long standing relationships with someone who is as equally attractive as they are. It was just one of those theories where certain things just start to make sense and you just think yes that’s why. It also suggests that if the two people differ greatly in physical attractiveness, then the less attractive person has some compensating quality, such as wealth or status.

I am not 100% sure I agree with this theory, because there are so many circumstances in which relationships are formed, therefore it simply cannot be accountable for all relationships. I also think it represents us humans as being very shallow beings, which I also do not agree with – I mean, yes some people are very shallow, but a lot are also not.

However, I do think it’s an awesome explanation and I’m sure you can think of a few couples who fit this description.

I know that was a short blog post but I wanted to write it quickly whilst I still had the thought in my head. I’d love to hear your views on this theory – do you agree with it?

Milan 2017

I think I’ve found my new favourite city! I recently went to Milan, Italy and it was awesome. I went with my dad from Wednesday to Sunday, so only for a few days but had a great time. I’d never really heard of anyone I know going to Milan and if they had it was just to pass through so I didn’t know what to expect. However, I absolutely loved the city with its chilled (and some very handsome!) locals, delicious food and breath taking sights.

The first thing I noticed was how chilled all the ‘locals’ were. No one was rushing anywhere and they all seemed so content! Loads of people were wearing suits as well, I don’t know how they didn’t burn up considering it was about 30 degrees! It had a very business-work vibe which I love!

We visited the Duomo, i.e. the gothic cathedral, on day one. We did the museum tour including going underneath the cathedral to see the archeological ruins from when it was first built. The inside of the cathedral was beautiful and absolutely huge! One thing which stood out to me was the tapestrys displayed from the ceiling – I’ve never seen this before so thought it was quite cool and unique. However, my favourite part was the outside. I’ve heard that the Duomo has been compared to a cake and a hedgehog. It certainly looked like a cake! Every single spire had a little statue on it and each was carved so intricately. We went to the ‘terraces’ which was basically the roof. This provided great views of the city sky line. The best way to describe the awesomeness of this is to just show you photos!

On day two we went to Castello Sforzesco. We didn’t do any of the tours or museums there but we walked around it and through the gardens. This was pretty impressive; both the castle and the grounds were beautiful. There was a live band playing in the grounds which (I’m assuming) was there because the Friday was Republican Day. This is an Italian holiday celebrating something to do with the monarchy they used to have. It was good to experience some local culture whilst we were there! On the same day we did an open top bus tour around the city. We hopped on and off at various locations and it also took us to the football stadium, which my dad was very impressed with!

On day three (our final day) we strolled around the city and went to the Teatro Alla Scala. This was so impressive! The theatre was enormous and it was fun to imagine what I’d be like to sing and act in front of a crowd that big. We also went through the museum there as well which taught us all about the life and works of various famous composers. We also walked through the shopping centre several times throughout our trip. This is one of the oldest shopping centres in the world and looks more like a palace than a shopping centre! Milan is the home and fashion and it’s clear to see why!

We also strolled along the Navigli canals on our final day and had lunch beside them. There were various market stalls up and down the streets so we walked around those as well.

The food was delicious! I ate mostly pasta in the evening and we had salads for lunch. On our first day there we found an awesome salad bar which was like a fast food salad resturant. They had the biggest selection of salads and puddings I’ve ever seen! Another place we went to had the best seafood spagetti I’ve ever had! There are so many good places to eat around the city and most are reasonably priced. I thought it was cheaper than London. We also went to an ice cream cafe where we got served the biggest, yummiest ice creams I’ve ever seen!

The buildings were so grand and reminded me a bit of some streets in Oxford city centre. The central station was more like a museum than a train station! It was huge and the building was amazing.

The trip was awesome and I’d love to go again! I might even start to learn Italian so I can move there someday! I hope you enjoyed this travel post.

New to my wardrobe

It feels like way to long since I’ve done a fashion post! They’re a little tricker to plan because you have to take photos so I like to do it when I have enough time to do it properly! I thought I would show you some of the things I’ve bought over the last couple of weeks – links to each item will be at the bottom – enjoy!

Bardot top

This is my first Bardot top! I expected it to be really uncomfortable but it’s actually not too bad. I love styling this with black jeans, a denim jacket and some little black boots. It’s great for a casual evening or daytime look.

Checkered skater dress

I absolutely love skater dresses – they look great and can be dress up or down – so when I say this one I was hooked. It kind of reminds me of an outfit out of a fairy tale. I can’t wait to wear this when it gets a bit warmer with some white converses. H&M also have loads of other dresses in the same style so I’m definitely going to go grab some more!

Black denim dress

This was a bit of a push from my usual style but I tried it on and was pleasantly surprised by how it looked! It is bodycon so it very flattering around the waist. I have to say, the picture does not do it justice! I wore this with a checked shirt for a friends birthday dinner a few weeks ago and felt comfortable in it all evening.

Bag

This was a little treat to myself after the first week back at college after the holidays. I’ve been needing a small evening bag for ages and was so pleased when I came across this one in Accessorize. It’s the perfect size for evenings (or even day trips!) and just fits my phone and purse in.

Shoes

These are a little daring and I have no idea when I’m going to end up wearing them! But I thought they were so pretty and I love the embroidery on the heels. The price for these was also amazing at (I think!) £16. They were from Primark so I cant give a link for them!
